buntu and slack

Post  Oncle Jean on Wed Dec 23, 2009 4:48 am

In a lot of ways I wish buntu would have used Slackware as a base.

I wish all Distros used Slackware as a base. The ones that do are rockin'.My 10 year old son has Zenwalk on his PC and it works well.

I've tried a few like Wolvix and Vector. They're great systems.

By the way, I'm moving this thread to Slackware-based Distros.

I forgot to say that in 2007, I tried KateOS. Have you ever used it ? Wonderful distro. I think it was first based on Slackware but not anymore. What's sad is that on DistroWatch, we can now read that it is "dormant". Here:

Yeah,I have used Kate OS.I remember that it had a Debian apt-get sorta installer that "resolved dependencies".Another one I remember is Frugalware.I dont try other distros now since the old PC that I used to use for such purposes died.I sometimes run a "live" CD if I get one free with a magazine but I haven't come across anything exciting.I would have recommended Slamd64 as it was 64 bit but with the 32 bit libs built in.It would save anyone requiring this a lot of faffing around but alas it is dead in the water with the release of Slackware 64 bit.

I haven't tried Frugalware but one can read many good things about it. In 2007 and 2008, I used many live CD's but I rarely do that now. Slackware gives me all I "need". Smile

I'l tell ya what...Zenwalk is a GREAT slack based distro. Majorly overlooked for some odd reason. It's package management system is simple and easy. Out of box Zenwalk is perfect. I have used it on many laptops (older and newer). As far as Vector..it worked great on older laptops. I have tried so many different distros over the past years....and I'm glad I keep comin back to Slackware. I'm done lookin at other distros though. And as far as Ubuntu is concerned....I wish it wasn't based off Debian...Debian has and always will be a decent distro for desktops and servers. Ubuntu has made me not like Debian anymore these days. hehe I just felt like venting here.

ZenWalk and Vector are some of the distros I tried in live CD's . Right, great ones. Vector was a bit tough on my old bike, though. I haven't tried Debian but many Debian-based distros like Kanotix, Knoppix, Sidux, grml, etc., etc. Distros like Ubuntu are not my cup of tea.

One of the things I like about Slackware is that you don't need to know much about it to start using it. Then you can slowly learn what you want to be able to do more and more things with your distro. This is a strong aspect, I think. You really don't have to read three books to install it. Smile
