What is a BSD Unix?

Post  Oncle Jean on Sun Nov 22, 2009 3:59 am

BSD systems are based upon real Unix source code contrary to Linux, which was developed from scratch (kernel).

I've used BSD in the past and can sum it up in one word... STABLE
(solid as a rock)

Linux has better support and many more applications.

I'm a man torn Evil or Very Mad Twisted Evil
It's Linux for now (because of my HDMI video card, ATI Catalyst Driver for Linux)

Slackware or OpenBSD??? Slackware for now, who knows what the future will hold.

Reg,

Both system groups have indeed their good sides. I really don't know BSD very much, though.
I think Slackware isn't very far from the BSD systems. Right ?

You're right, that's one of the reasons I'm using Slackware.
The biggest differences would be partitioning (slice),
the filesystem and ports as well as the packager.

I believe DragonflyBSD is putting in native support
for clustering and they have the Hammer filesystem.
(I've only played w/ Dragonfly, so I don't have much experience)
(OpenBSD was my BSD of choice, very secure)
