No Backlight When I Boot-Up...

Post  Will__E on Fri Apr 27, 2012 10:41 pm

Hi, I'm new..)

My problem is, I eventually got slackware to run dual with my xp without it ripping xp to pieces. ( I had to not do the lilo install, must still get to that..) the first thing I have to do is get my Laptop's Backlight to STAY ON. I am having the same trouble with this distro as I had with several other linux OS's... on boot-up, I have to select a OS( but in this case I booted from the usb to get slack running becoz no lilo) in the process of booting slack the screen goes black...No Backlight... I have to hold the machine at all kinds of weird angles to get some light on the screen to try and see what is going on... Luckily(or not) I've had this problem before and slack opened in dos mode first time so i tried what i had to do to get the light back on with the other OS i battled with... in terminal/dos mode, i had to insert a code.. " setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=0 " And WALA, the light came on... How and what do i do to not go through this everytime I boot up??

Thank you.

Just for interest sake incase you ask,

I installed Slackware13.37, dual boot with Xp Sp3
My Laptop is Acer Emachine E725, Intel 2.0ghz dual, 2Gb ram, 256Mb integrated video think its G45??
If any of this would help...

Hi Will__E

So, I think you need create an script with your pci instruction and execute automagically when slackware startup..

But, your pci instruction is pretty small, so in this case you can just add the command to your rc.local file..

And every time you startup your slackware box.. your command will be executed..

I tried...

went to terminal, then, nano /etc/rc.local

a window popped up with nothing in it, i entered the " setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=0 " , then, F3 to write, and then exit the window. Reboot the machine and i was left in the dark again...
When I fixed this problem with the previous Linux OS, I recall some coding in the rc.local file and I had to insert some extra code with it to get it working, then also when the pc was left for a long time and the screen went out...gues what...when i move the mouse...nothing happened, I then had to insert some other extra code to it...then all was good, until i had to /wanted to upgrade to something else...

And now I cant remember how to permenantly fix this and cant find the solution to this problem...

Can you or anyone else pleae help me....its a real pain everytime i have to leave my pc or on bootup to get the screen on...

Thanx!

The complete path of rc.local file is:
Code:

/etc/rc.d/rc.local

If you type "nano /etc/rc.local" actually you has created a new file named "rc.local" inside your /etc file. Delete it..

2 Options

1) verify rc.local in the correct path. You can edit it only with root privilegies. ( sudo /etc/rc.d/rc.local )
Try to add your pci command and verify is working.

2) Using KDE System preferences -> Autorun
You can add your command at your autorun KDE service. Click on add program and type your command..
every time you start your KDE box.. wala!.. KDE will execute your pci command..

Try it!..

Cheers!

GREAT STUFF!!

It worked.... Now for the second part of the Backlight issue... When I leave the pc for some time and it goes into sleep or hibernation I sit with the same problem again... I know that I have to put some extra coding in at rc.local now but I cant remember...

Can you assist?

Thanx!
